Turangi-Mangaweka 1st February

70 miles up and over the 'desert road'. Lots of conflicting opinions about the safety of this road prior to this ride.

It's basically a long climb(1000 metres approx), over about 20 miles through pine forest, then out on to a desert like scrubland for about another 15 miles, before starting a descent. There are fabulous views of Mt Ruhpehu ( a snow capped, active volcano)and Mt Ngauruhoe (smaller, but also active volcano), not sure when last either of these erupted.

I found the road fine, good hard shoulder space, most of the time, but I imagine bad weather it could be pretty bleak up there. Apparently it does get closed on a fairly regular basis, particularly in the winter months.

Managed to reach Waiuru by lunchtime, just under 40 miles into the ride, this is the first town on the road. Stopped for lunch, where I met an American, also on a bike tour, chatted about, routes, roads etc. Exciting conversations us cyclists have!!!
Apart from one long climb at the end of the day, afternoon was mostly down hill or flat, what a treat!
Just heard tomorrow forecasts heavy rain, not sure what to do...Don't particularly fancy sitting it out in a campsite in the middle of nowhere. Oh well, that decision is for tomorrow...
