Slisbee- Merryville 11th April

53 Miles.
Fast ride, through the last of the Texas countryside.

Met a very nice man (Burt Cooper) at a gas station, who was very interested in the trip we were doing. He farms growing crops for himself and a few to sell. He told me that sadly his wife died last year from cancer. He said that she wouldn't have any treatment, because she was scared that it would make her feel more sick.

I felt sad for him and his wife, who maybe had not been given enough support or information about his treatment.

Crossed the border from Texas into the state of Louisiana and the beginning of Cajun country. We had been invited to the Merryville historical society to camp and for supper. Merryville is a small town with a population of eleven hundred.

I got to the museum late morning, just before a large rainstorm that caught most of the group out.

Thankfully we were able to sleep inside the museum on the floor, (strange experience), but certainly better than trying to put up tents in pouring rain.

We were treated to arrival snacks then a Cajun meal( picture below) of Gumbo (a sort of stew), Jumbalya(rice and meat dish)and swamp beans. ( beans with sausage).
We also had the mayor of the town cone along to welcome us and join us for dinner.
All very tasty and provided by women from the town. Sadly I have not remembered all their names but a special thanks to Renee and Elaine( pictured below), who provided us a wonderful welcome.
